“[A] searing analysis of the deep roots of white supremacy and black exploitation in modern culture” — DECOLONIZE HIPSTERS reviewed in Africa Is a Country

Tuesday, May 25th, 2021

The beauty and the force of Decolonize Hipsters is the way Pierrot folds and unfolds the pleats of historical moments to tell a story of race in the Atlantic world…. The genius of this book is not just in Pierrot’s analysis but in his delivery of it… Pierrot’s humor is the kind that refuses to soft pedal for anyone’s comfort. He reveals this kind of accommodation to be part of the problem in the first place: the hipster’s recourse to snark and irony is an insidious dodge… Pierrot’s accounting of the consequences of hipsterdom on present day politics is damning. The cult of individuality and commitment to burnishing one’s quirkiness is exposed for what it is: depoliticization, consumerism, complicity… In the end, though, Pierrot offers a path forward—the possibility of breaking the cycle of colonization, appropriation, and theft. He brings a genuine spirit of hopefulness imbued with a generosity that cannot but feel a bit heartbreaking.”

“A damning political polemic of a controversial administration mired in failed leadership.” — THE PRINCE reviewed in Kirkus Reviews

Tuesday, May 18th, 2021

“In this corrective to Cuomo’s cherry-picked account of his (mis)management, American Crisis, veteran journalist [Ross] Barkan, who has covered Cuomo as a journalist at City Hall for eight years, urgently chronicles the governor’s crushing fall from grace amid the relentlessly grim backdrop of the virus. In lucid, declarative prose, the author cites numerous incidents that have contributed to the deterioration of Cuomo’s administration… Barkan dissects the Covid fiasco in a clear timeline showing the spread of the virus across America on the heels of the Trump impeachment proceedings… Based on original reporting and expansive interviews, this slim, scathing book convincingly debunks Cuomo’s ‘false narrative of triumph’ and, in exacting detail, reveals the corrupt side of present-day New York government.”

Variety reports HATE INC to be made into feature documentary

Friday, May 14th, 2021

In a statement, Taibbi said he was excited to partner with Vespucci, citing the company’s past work with reporters:

“’Hate Inc.’ is a book about the way the news media business has commoditized anger and division, eschewing traditional fact-based reporting and objectivity in favor of a new strategy based on telling audiences what they want to hear,” Taibbi said. “Because much of this transformation took place in visual and auditory media, the subject easily lends itself to a documentary – in fact, even as I was writing the book, I was aware it may be a story more easily told on screen.”

“15 Salvadoran Military Officers Could Soon Go on Trial for the El Mozote Massacre” — WEAKNESS AND DECEIT featured in Jacobin

Friday, May 7th, 2021

“In his book Weakness and Deceit: America and El Salvador’s Dirty War, former New York Times correspondent Raymond Bonner cites the recollections of massacre survivor Rufina Amaya, whose blind husband and three daughters were slaughtered:

From her hiding place in the trees, she heard the soldiers’ conversation: “Lieutenant, somebody here says he won’t kill children,” said one soldier. “Who’s the son of a bitch who said that?” the lieutenant answered. “I am going to kill him.”

…As Bonner writes in Weakness and Deceit, Reagan’s celebration of Salvadoran efforts took place precisely one day after both the Washington Post and the New York Times had run stories about the massacre; according to a tally by the archdiocese’s legal aid office, in the year preceding the certification “13,353 Salvadorans had been murdered by the Salvadoran Army, security forces, and paramilitary groups.”
